History of the IPEG
IPEG guidelines:
- Guidelines for Pharmaco-EEG Studies in Man (1982)
- Recommendations for Standardization of Data Acquisition and Signal Analysis in Pharmaco-Electroencephalography (1987)
- Recommendations for EEG and Evoked Potential Mapping (1990)
- Standard operating procedure for the registration and computer-supported evaluation of Pharmaco-EEG Data (1995)
- IPEG Guideline on Statistical Design and Analysis for Pharmacodynamic Trials (1998)
Two new guidelines are in preparation, which are targeted to be finalised at the IPEG 2006 meeting in Japan:
- Guidelines for the use of q-EEG results
- Quantitative Sleep Research Guidelines/Standards in pharmaco-EEG-Sleep
The IPEG is an association of scientists and researchers actively involved in electrophysiological brain research in preclinical and clinical pharmacology, neurotoxicology and related areas of interest. The IPEG was established in 1980 (history). IPEG members include active members, junior and senior members, corporate members and honorary members.

Japanese pharmaco-EEG Group ( JPEG ).
"The JPEG was founded in 1990 and an annual meeting is held each year from 1990 onwards. The 1st and 2nd meeting were organized by Dr. M. Sato (Kansai Medical Univ.), the 3rd meeting by Dr. S. Endo (Nippon Medical School), the 4th by Dr. K. Inoue (Osaka Univ.), the 5th by Dr. M. Miyasaka (Dokkyo Univ.), the 6th by Dr. K. Yamada (Ymaguchi Univ.) and the 7th was organised by Dr. O. Kanno (Teikyo Univ.) in Yokohama. In every meeting there are about 20 presentations with fruitful discussions. After each meeting, there is a get together in a very friendly atmosphere.
The board of JPEG consists of Dr. M. T. Kinoshita as president and of the following board members Dr. K. Iinuma (Tohoku Univ., Sendai), Dr. R. Inoue(Juntendo Univ., Tokyo), Dr. S. Endo (Nippon Medical School, Tokyo), Dr. M. Osawa (Tokyo Women's Medical Univ., Tokyo), Dr. O. Kanno(Tohoku Aoba Hospital, Sendai), Dr. Y. Kuroiwa (Yokohama City Univ., Yokohama), Dr. Y. Koga (Kyorin Univ., Tokyo), Dr. Y. Koshino (Kanazawa Univ., Kanazawa), Dr. T. Kojima (Nippon Medical School, Tokyo), Dr. S. Chiba (Asahikawa Medical College, Asahikawa), Dr. K. Nagata (Research Institute for Brain and Blood Vessels Akita), Dr. S. Niwa (Fukushima Medical Univ., Fukushima), Dr. K. Hirata (Dokyyo Medical Univ., Tokyo), Dr. K. Hiramatsu (The Univ. of Ryuku, Okinawa) and Dr. H. Yamadera (Kyorin Univ., Tokyo)..
Dr. T. Kinoshita,,
representative of the JPEG in the IPEG board."
During meetings in Berlin, organized by Stille and Hermann to develop guidelines for
pharmaco-EEG analysis, the IPEG was established in 1980, followed by its first formal meeting in
1982 and the designation of Neuropsychobiology as its official scientific journal. For a
more detailed overview of the history of the IPEG see the
Members only pages.
IPEG meetings are held biannually. A list of previous meetings with information
can be found on a separate page.

One of the goals of the IPEG is to put forward recommendations on relevant aspects of pharmaco-EEG studies in order to standardize the use of techniques as well as the presentation of results. One of the advantages of such guidelines is that it facilitates the comparison the results of different studies. Special sub-committees ofthe IPEG have been installed to set up these guidelines. At the moment there are 5 guidelines available and one on animal EEG studies is being developed.
The following guidelines have been issued by the IPEG:
The text of these guidelines is accessible for members on the Members only pages.
Apart from these guidelines various books were published under the auspices of the IPEG:
Electroencephalography in Drug Research (W.M. Herrmann, ed.) Springer Verlag, 1980. (This book was the result of a joint meeting of the German Federal Health Office and IPEG).
A limited number of copies of these books is still available upon request to the IPEG secretariat.

The next IPEG meeting and training course will be held
at the premises of Forenap in Rouffach, France and will be organized by Dr. Rémy
Luthringer.
